Backbone

This is one of those portraits that people didn't want me to finish, and so I didn't. Doesn't look anything like the Haitian activist it's supposed to be, so I won't even tell you anything about her until I make another.

Mycoremediation of the human

Tree Pose.
Approx 3' x 5'
Acrylic on board.
Inspired by the work of Paul Stamets, mycologist. Mycoremediation is a term coined by Stamets to name the process of using fungi to reduce toxins in an environment. Mushrooms have survived 5 extinctions. One of the key features of their adaptability is what they are able to achieve via a web of raw interconnectedness.

Now available as a greeting card at Two Neat
in downtown Mill Valley.

Thanks to Mirabai Yoga for the yoga picture!

Tim DeChristopher

Tim DeChristopher was sentenced to jail for two years for disrupting a leasing auction for federal oil and gas exploration, saving 150,000 acres of wilderness near Arches Canyon Park, etc. He decided not to appeal his case because the court forbid any discussion of "ethics, justice, or the role of citizens, restricting his defense to a narrow range of technicalities rather than the critical issues of the case.

Bidder 70 Documentary trailer.
"At this point of unimaginable threats on the horizon, this is what hope looks like.  In these times of a morally bankrupt Government that has sold out its principles, this is what patriotism looks like.  With countless lives on the line, this is what love looks like, and it will only grow.  The choice you are making today is what side you are on."
- Tim DeChristopher's address to the Court - July 26th, 2011
  • The fossil fuel industry should not control our justice system.
  • This trial is about intimidating other activists, not justice for Tim.
  • We will support Tim by continuing to fight for justice and a livable future.

Empire?

Happy New Year! And, about that holiday greeting card adventure...

It was very satisfying to put my artwork out in a very public and affordable form this xmas holiday season -as holiday/greeting cards- and to get a lot of good feedback.
I met a lot of great people who were very helpful and supportive of me.

.
In October Tim Dale at Yoga Tree made a suggestion I make a few greeting cards with my art that he and others could purchase! What a great idea! Thank you!
Thanks to Bob at Two Neat in Mill Valley and Hendrick at WIGT printing who were exposed to the minutia of my thought processes (wow, quite often), and magically kept their humor. Thank you.
Thanks also to Michelle Myrhe for her enthusiasm, support and her big purchase~you're a pal!
Thank you also to Elisa Brooks  who pushed me out the door of the plane with my parachute, yelling "jump!" and "You're an artist! Why aren't you art-ing?"

However, while the development of a greeting card
empire, was a handy, uh, positive affirmation, and even a distinct possibility, in practice it isn't really how I want to spend my time. The materials, the costs, the details are too much time spent for too low a return in profits, etc... The real-er me wants to be involved in more edgy kinds of thought processes and creations with a deeper, more meaningful impact on the world...like my Haiti artwork.

I'm going to be finishing up some paralegal schooling and doing a little exploratory painting in the next few months. Stay tuned to see what I come up with.
Currently I'm very, very inspired by the writing of Derrick Jensen (hence, the painting below). Why hadn't I heard of him before? I am weaving together my own personal experiences and understandings of human rights/the environment with his and it's been mind-blowing for me. He's introduced me to a whole other world of thinkers from various fields of study/walks of life. For example, in "Truths Among Us" his interviews with Judith Herman, Stanley Aronowitz and Luis Rodriguez. But the first interview he did (when he was 22) was with Joseph Campbell, what a start!
I'm near the end of his "The Culture of Make-Believe" and "Endgame, part 1" is in the mail.

Let's see what happens in 2012, shall we? My goal is to engage in more productive, more meaningful activities that are more aligned with who I am and what I believe. You?

This painting is about saving ancient redwoods.
I painted it in the 90s when I was wrapped up in the efforts to save California's last ancient redwoods from corporate raider  Charlie Hurwitz.

The Haiti Emergency Relief Fund (HERF) based in Oakland, California  places funds directly into the hands of the people in Haiti who need it most. This is Haitian-directed aid, an important distinction. HERF acts immediately to assist Haitians with the cholera epidemic, health care, education, human rights, women's organizing, local food production and more.
